How do I go
digital?
Every photographer today knows that
he has to convert his studio into a
digital setup one or the other day.
This feeling is definitely true if we
look at the tremendous development in
digital camera, software and
printers. Digital technology offers
many advantages over the conventional
chemicals and film roll process. But
to adopt digital technology to
convert ones conventional photo
studio into a digital one, do the
photographers require to learn
computers going to a computer
training institute? No.
An IBM compatible personal computer
running Windows operating system is a
very user friendly one. By that I
mean, if you have used a professional
35mm slr camera, or a vcd player or a
video camera, then you will not be
flabbergasted when you first start
using a computer. You would only
require to operate a mouse properly,
since it requires a little practice.
But you can go ahead with a little
trial and error. The Windows software
will not go haywire if you wrongly
click somewhere else, instead mostly
you will see a message box telling
you either what you have done or what
the system cannot do! Carefully read
these error messages and go ahead.
So, do not worry about whether you
will damage the computer that way.
The hardware vendor from whom you
will purchase your computer system
will tell you how to start and exit
Windows, how to switch on and switch
off the computer, how to connect the
printer and so on. All the electronic
components you will purchase for your
digital photo studio will mostly come
with a User Manual. Read all those
manuals carefully and clear all your
doubts by asking someone who is
friendly. The Windows operating
system has an extensive help on
various topics. When in doubt go to
windows explorer and click on help
from the menu bar and search for the
related topic.
Apart from the above, you will
require software - FotoReplica,
Fotolab for printing of your digital
photos. Both these software have a
graphical interface, meaning, there
is very little text to read on most
screens. Most buttons have symbolic
pictures on them, so that with a
little imagination anybody can
visualise what a particular button
click will perform. Nothing is going
to be wrong if you do a mistake.
Practice of a day or two is enough to
start off printing professional work.
When you actually start working
completely digital, that is taking a
photograph using a digital camera and
printing that instantly on an inkjet
printer through FotoReplica using a
computer, then you will really see
and feel the difference it makes in
your overall working. You will notice
that you are becoming more and more
creative as you fiddle with the
computer each day. You will notice
that you have the complete control on
how the final print should come out.
You will be able to make any color
correction or composition the way you
wanted it to be. You will not need to
count the frames you exposed on the
roll film in your camera and run
around for the processing of those
films to meet the delivery deadlines.
You will be able to work quitely at
your own pace. In your spare time you
will be able to explore and learn new
things using your computer. You will
be able to do a lot of creative work
on the photos you took using your
digital camera, explore the immense
possibilities of the effects you can
add to your photos using Fotoreplica
software which can add value to your
work.
So, don't feel outcasted. You can do
it if YOU decide to do so. One has to
change with the times. So make change
as soon as you can. Because the
technology is rapidly developing and
changing the way we do photography,
we have to change ourselves and adopt
to the times. Technology develops new
opportunities for us, so instead of
getting intimidated by the change we
must take advantage of the new
things.
... All the best!
